After a short hiatus, WotNot return with the first in a string of new releases for 2018. Label boss Charo’s Love Three Ways moves effortlessly through musical influences and eras, the embodiment of the label’s ethos, which has provided a springboard to artists as diverse as K15, Glenn Astro, Deft, U and Danvers.
In a nod to the WotNot family’s love of eating (and food television), this EP treats the same ingredient in three different ways, creating a triptych of contrasting but complementary songs. Produced by Charo and WotNot co-founder JJ Mumbles and mixed/executive produced by techno God Manni Dee, the release displays the same knack for creating a mood apparent in his last release Floating Free, which received support from Foals and BBC 6Music among others.
Drawing on early 90s boogie pop, opener What Would You Know explores unrequited puppy love. Playful lyrics on romance (“I feel like I’m your comfy sweater, he’s your LBD”) sit over a beat drenched in youthful energy, with a pounding boogie bass line and Prince-like claps.
Two killer remixes provide additional nostalgia, courtesy of Brownswood/Worldwide/Apron OG SMBD’s 2-step flip, and Alphabets Heaven’s broken beat remix that nods to 90s and 00s R&B’s Oriental obsession.
The Hurt is a heartbreaking meditation on a dying love, Charo’s seemingly effortless vocals floating over a bumping hip hop beat with echoes of 9th Wonder.
Bringing the release to a close is Hope For A Heart, a 6/8 soul ballad inspired by classic protest songs. To reinforce this social message, the groundshaking 808 bass and quasi-religious dubbed out organ sounds nod heavily to dub.
